Dolly Dawn, real name Theresa Stabile, was born in Newark, NJ, in 1916, and initially became a big band singer on radio in the early 1930s. When she joined George Hall’s orchestra in 1935, she was given the name of Dolly Dawn, and made records under that name through into the 1950s, with the members of Hall’s band who accompanied her being known as her Dawn Patrol. In 1941, George Hall turned the band over to her, so she became leader, and Hall became her manager. This 51-track 2-CD collection features selected A & B sides of her releases on the Bluebird, Variety, Vocalion, Elite, Regent & Jubilee labels. It includes her No. 1 “You’re A Sweetheart” and the Top 10 hits “The You And Me That Used To Be”, “Have You Got Any Castles, Baby”, “Blossoms On Broadway”, “Who Blew Out The Flame” and “Goody Goodbye”. Although the hits dried up, she continued performing as Dawn Stabile through into the 1980s. She was one of the artists who typified a particular strand of pop through the swing era of the ‘30s and ‘40s, and this is a substantial and entertaining showcase for her music, which captures the musical zeitgeist of those days.
