Hugo Winterhalter was an arranger, conductor, composer and musical director, who held posts at MGM, Columbia and RCA-Victor through the post-war decades, and was involved in arranging and providing accompaniment on many hit records by major artists during those years. However, he also made records on his own account under his own name, and had more than 25 hits in US pop charts. This 50-track 2-CD collection comprises selected A & B sides of releases on the MGM, Columbia and RCA-Victor labels from this era, and features all his hits under his own name from this era, including those where he received equal billing on the label with featured vocalists or soloists. It includes his No. 2 hit “Canadian Sunset” with pianist Eddie Heywood, plus Top 10 hits “Jealous Heart”, “Blue Christmas”, “Count Every Star”, “Blue Tango”, “Vanessa”, “The Velvet Glove” and “The Little Shoemaker”, along with hits with The Fontane Sisters, Don Cornell and Merv Griffin. He was one of the vital backroom practitioners, whose contributions were often overlooked, but who sometimes had the chance to grab the limelight, and this collection is an enjoyable insight into the orchestral work of one the most renowned of those great arranger/conductors.
