The UK Album Chart was first published in the music paper the Record Mirror in July 1956. It was a Top 5 chart and during the first five or six months of its existence through to the end of 1956, just fifteen different albums were listed in that chart, with six of those making No. 1. Of those, three were the soundtracks of the movie versions of Rodgers & Hammerstein musicals, “Carousel”, “Oklahoma” and “The King And I”. Other artists to make the top spot were Frank Sinatra, Bill Haley & His Comets and Elvis Presley. This 45-track 2-CD collection comprises three selected titles from each of those albums to give a representative flavour of the content of the charts during its first year of operation. It makes for an interesting and varied selection of music, underlining the state of flux the pop landscape was in with the advent of rock ‘n’ roll in the pop charts during the previous year or more. This collection builds on Acrobat long-standing catalogue of annual “British Hit Parade” collections and our parallel “America’s Greatest Hits” sets, based on the singles charts in each market, and there will be subsequent collections for the years which followed.
